This film was overwhelmingly voted the “Audience Choice” film by our audience.
Set in north-west Russia, Leviathan follows Kolya, a part-time mechanic’s struggle to hold on to his family home against a corrupt local Mayor, who has decided its waterside site is the perfect location for his own Ceaușescu-like ‘palace’.
“It will move anyone who’s encountered corruption, whose considered having or losing faith. It is as an essential – and restorative – a piece of cinema as one could ever hope to see.” Catherine Shoard, The Guardian
Starring Aleksei Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, Sergey Pokhodaev and Vladimir Vdovichenkov.
The story packs quite a punch, with big themes at play. The consequences of an all-pervasive cronyism that protects the Mayor and his kind as he goes about his campaign of subjugation provide a caricature of contemporary Russia with Putin’s regime at its epicentre. There is no doubting the primacy of power derived through menace and money and its corrosive effect on the lives of Russian people. However the film’s appeal is much broader than this and there are redeeming forces at work here.
Directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev, 138 minutes. 2015
